Our Waste Water Treatment Explained Step-by-Step

Industrial waste water treatment refers to the technologies, mechanisms and processes used to treat water that has been contaminated by industrial or commercial activities prior to being released back into the environment or repurposed. A large number of industries around Australia and New Zealand produce waste water. How this waste is dealt with is often subject to strict regulations.

The aim in many industries today is to minimise the production of wet waste in the production process or to recycle waste water. This ensures the environment is protected and that future business activities are sustainable and compliant. Water is one of the most expensive commodities on an industrial scale, with many industries such as mining and agriculture using enormous amounts. By treating and recycling water, organisations can drastically reduce operational costs.

Removal, Not Filtration

There are a variety of technologies available to treat waste water. Conventional systems aim to remove oil and hydrocarbons from water by mechanical separation. This approach generally relies on a long sequence of steps which is ultimately prone to system bottlenecking and other failures. Changes in the composition or loading of oil and hydrocarbons can overwhelm many traditional systems.

OLEOLOGY’s MyCelx system, on the other hand, is quite straightforward and more importantly, reliable. It doesn’t rely on a simple filter or a chemical treatment. Instead, MyCelx polymer permanently binds with oil through molecular cohesion, absorbing oil without absorbing water; this eliminates the risk of pollutants re-entering the water stream. MyCelx is capable of removing oils, greases, BTEX, PCBs and heavy metals.

Quick Installation, Operation and Performance

MyCelx systems use advanced methods to remove pollutants from water but are simple to operate. The systems are custom designed to meet the specific needs of each company and can be installed as a “plug-and-play”, meaning there are no complex controls required. It can be operated to its specified application by existing staff with very little training or instruction.

Once it’s set up, the OLEOLOGY system can remove oil at a rate of less than 1 ppm, making it an oil-free water technology. This means the water can be recycled or discharged back into the environment in a way that is compliant with government regulations. Recycled water can also be re-used for washdown bays or for dust suppression.

Replacing MyCelx Filters

The MyCelx compound encourages oil molecules to separate from water and bond with other oil molecules. Oil is then chemically bound and captured on the MyCelx filter. This filter will continue to treat water until the filter saturates with hydrocarbon (and will never release). Our experienced team can help you calculate or evaluate when this is likely to happen.

Once filters are used up, the used filters and materials can be incinerated or sent to landfill depending on relevant government regulations in your area. Incinerated filters have low ash content and offer high thermal energy value. MyCelx filters do not wear over time and can only be used up when in contact with hydrocarbons.
